What do Oprah Winfrey, S.C. Johnson and Delavan-based Stebnitz Builders
have in common? Besides their Midwestern ties, they have all won awards from
the International Listening Association (ILA).
Serving Walworth County area homeowners with services ranging from home
repair to whole house remodeling, Stebnitz Builders joined this elite group
by winning the 2007 ILA Award for Listening in the Business Sector. Owner
Chris Stebnitz proudly accepted the award from his gracious nominator and
satisfied client Dr. Barbara Penington; ILA member, professor of
communication and chair of the Department of Communication at the University
of Wisconsin-Whitewater. "The typical remodelers focus is on design or
saving money, but Stebnitz takes an entirely different tact; one people long
for, but don't expect--listening," she emphasized.
Stebnitz expressed his appreciation not only for the award, but also for its
origination. "Typically, contractors apply for various building and design
awards based on projects they feel warrant recognition," Stebnitz explained.
"Because a client initiated this nomination, we couldn't be more honored.
The award validates our conviction that listening resonates with clients and
staff, and adds significant value to the experiences our clients enjoy
throughout their remodeling experience."
Regardless of position, each staff member receives training in the Stebnitz
Builders Procedural Listening method. Stebnitz "first developed it for
clients to ensure that their projects became what they wanted, not what our
professional experience has led us to believe they should want. We listen,
question, reflect and test to be sure we've heard what our clients have
said. Theres a reason behind the request and we use procedural listening to
understand the underlying need, the dream, behind the initial request."
Today, procedural listening is fully integrated into--and even beyond--the
firm's business culture. "These skills are not only put to use with our
clients, but they have carried over to our everyday communication with each
other in the office, with our trade contractors and suppliers and even with
our own families. I know I am a better communicator because I'm a better
listener. The benefits to that in life and business are immeasurable," said
